This query language had a compositional approach, starting with a table then banging on it with various operations, filtering it down, merging in another table, computing another column. The step by step process, seeing the intermediate steps, was a rather powerful way to think about transforming data. If you take an SQL expression and know what you're doing, you can remove clauses and get something similar, but they go together in confusing orders and have surprising consequences. It's difficult to get a step by step reasoning about an SQL query even if you're a DB expert.
