The display was engineered by AEG Telefunken, building upon a concept by A V de V Krause (referenced in Wireless World, July 1974, p.259). It features a 2-inch diagonal screen and a tube length of roughly 4.5 inches. To conserve power, electrostatic deflection is employed. The extra-high tension voltage is around 2 kV, generated by an oscillator that produces only marginal brightness. (Outdoor viewing was not permitted, as the Sinclair team appeared anxious that an eager journalist might abscond with the unit, preventing us from even holding it, much less taking it outside.) Sinclair was uncertain about the heater power—earlier versions of the Krause tube used 30 mW—while a comparable AEG Telefunken tube promoted in German and Danish publications lists 35 mW.
